On This Day in Time, 69 years ago – December 20, 1946, the movie It’s a Wonderful Life debuted at the Globe Theater in New York City. Starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, the film was initially met with mixed reviews and did not become a Christmas classic until several decades later. Eventually, during the 1970’s, the film became a staple on television during the Christmas season which caused the film to obtain the acclaim it enjoys today.
Although nominated for numerous Academy Awards, It’s a Wonderful Life was selected only for the “Technical Achievement” Oscar and failed to upset in the more popular categories. However, as of recent times, the film has been voted into the the top ten best American films ever made and was also recently named the most influential American film in history!
There are talks of an un-authorized sequel, titled It’s a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story…but Paramount Theaters has yet to release the rights to the independent studio behind the sequel.
